Text
The Akkadian stone name šadānu “haematite” most likely simply refers to the ore’s ‘(coming) from the mountain’, from Akkadian šadû ‘mountain’. The word recurs in Greek as oreitēs, from oros ‘mountain’, and Greek ἔμψυχον ὀρείτης reflects Akkadian šadānu balṭu.
