When the spirit of a dead person has taken possession of a man … When the hand of a spirit of the dead has taken possession of a man … If it is the spirit of a member of my family or my household or the spirit of one slain in battle or a wandering spirit …

Aristophanes, fr. 322:
(A dead hero is speaking:) Darum, ihr Männer, nehmt euch in Acht und verehrt uns Heroen, denn wir sind die Geber des Bösen und des Guten; wir strafen die Bösewichte, Räuber und Diebe. Den Dieben geben wir Milzucht, Husten, Wassersucht, Schnupfen, Jucken, Gicht, Wahnsinn, Ausschlag, Drüsenschwellungen, Frost, Fieber [ … ] den Räuber aber geben wir [ … ].
