The Greek word kanon means both reed and measuring stick, deriving from Akkadian qanû. The specialized use of the Greek term for measuring stick corresponds to Akkadian qan mindati and Hebrew qneh hammidah with the same meaning. The appearance of the term in Greek shows that a basic tool and concept of building construction has been imported.
