The use of purifying substances is a basic ritual concept of Mesopotamian Namburbi incantations, such objects were deposited in inaccessible places.

Hippocratic Corpus, On the Sacred Disease:
Of the purifying objects (katharmatōn), some they hide in the earth, others they throw into the sea, others they carry away to the mountains, where nobody can touch them or tread on them.
