Text
Rassam Cylinder 1.1-10, 1.18-26:
I am Assurbanipal, created by Aššur and Ninlil, the crown prince from the House of Succession, whose name Aššur and Sin, the Lord of the Crown, from of old proclaimed for kingship, and whom in his mother’s womb they created for the shepherdship of Assyria. Šamaš, Adad and Ištar promised my exercising the kingship through their reliable oracles. Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, my own father, heeded the orders of Aššur and Ninlil, the deities in whom he put his trust, by which they promised him that I will exercise the kingship … he convened the people of Assyria young and old, from coast to coast, for protecting my crown-princeship and - afterward - my exercising the kingship over Assyria; he made them pronounce a sworn agreement and established a binding treaty. Amidst rejoicing and merrymaking I entered the House of Succession, an artfully constructed place, the node of the kingdom, wherein Sennacherib, father of the father who engendered me, exercised the crown-princeship and kingship.
