Descent of Ištar to the Netherworld 1-11: To the netherworld, land of n[o return], Ištar, daughter of Sin, [set] her mind. Indeed, the daughter of Sin did set [her] mind to the gloomy house, seat of the ne[therworld], to the house which none leaves who enters, to the road whose journey has no return, to the house whose entrants are bereft of light, where dust is their sustenance and clay their food. They see no light but dwell in darkness, they are clothed like birds in wings for garments, and dust has gathered on the door and bolt.
Job 10:21: Before I go, not to return, to the land of dark and blackness.
Homer, Iliad 23.72, 75-80: (Spirit of Patroclus to Achilles:) Bury me with all speed, that I pass within the gates of Hades.
And give me your hand, I pitifully entreat you, for never more again shall I come back from out of Hades, when once you have given me my due of fire. Never more in life shall we sit apart from our dear comrades and take counsel together, but for me had loathly fate opened its maw, the fate that was appointed me even from my birth.
