Text
Syriac Book of Medicines, fol. 226-7a: If you go forth from your house, and a pig meets you, and he comes towards you, it is a good sign. And if a dog meets you, and he comes after you, and barks at you, you shall not set out on your journey, for it is not a good sign. And if it happens that you see a dog coming out of a house, and he is pleased to meet you, go on your journey, for there shall be advantage therein. And if two men, or two married women, meet you, go, for it is a good sign. And if unmarried youths or maidens meet you, go back, for there will be much weariness on the road. And if camels meet you, and they are loaded, and come towards you, good will fill the road. And if bulls meet you, turn back, for there are wrath and trouble on the road. And if you see a man scattering water, and sitting down, go on your way, for good will fill the road. And if you see a woman, or a maiden, casting forth filth, it is not a good sign. And if you go forth, and see a black man, it is not a good sign; you shoult not go forth from your house.
