Text
Mar Jacob, Homily on Shamuna and Guria:
By his crucification the Son of God slew death; and because death was slain it did not distress the martyrs. With a crushed serpent one plays without fear; a coward, too, will drag at a dead lion. Our Lord crushed the great serpent by his cross, and by his passion the dread lion God’s Son slew. Death bound He, and cast him down and trode upon him at hell’s door; and all who wish may now draw near and mock him because he is slain. Shamuna and Guria, old men, mocked at death; especially at that lion slain by the God’s Son. The great serpent, which slew Adam among the trees - anybody, who has drunk from the blood of cross, can seize it. By his cross the Son of God crushed the dragon; and lo, that bruised serpent now boys and old men mock at. Pierced is that lion by the lance of God’s Son, and everyone who wishes now tramples, despises and mocks him. The cause of all good things is the Son of God himself.
