Text
pseudo-Nonnus, Armenian Scholion to Cyprian 2 (Scholia):
The pine tree signifies perseverance and philosophy; for it is always with leaves in both summer and winter, just as philosophic patience does not let those who are adorned with it be unhappy at any time. For this reason they (= Greeks) used to crown those who had endured in combats of the games with branches of pine, as though they too, by endurance and perseverance, were full of leaves. Now Isthmia is the name of the place from which they take the pine.
