Maimonides, Guide for the Perplexed 3.29:
they considered stars as deities, and the sun as the chief deity. They believe that all the seven stars are gods, but the two luminaries are greater than all the rest. They say distinctly that the sun governs the world, both that which is above and that which is below
All the Sabians thus believed in the eternity of the Universe, the heavens being, in their opinion, God.
