Text
Cyril of Alexandria, In Isaiam 18.1-2, PG 70.441:
… some such thing was practised by those in the land beyond the rivers of Ethiopia (= Alexandria) … Taking a pitcher, then writing a letter to the women in Byblos to the effect that Adonis had been found, inserting this into the pitcher, and sealing it, they lowered it into the sea, performing certain rites over it. And as they said, it arrived automatically in Byblos on certain days of the year. Certain women, who were friends of Aphrodite, would receive it, take the letter, and cease from their mourning, because Adonis had been found by Aphrodite.
