Diodorus Siculus 2.3.1-2: For having accomplished deeds more notable than those of any king before him, he was eager to found a city of such magnitude, that not only would it be the largest of any which then existed in the whole inhabited world, but also no other ruler of a later time should, if he undertook such a task, find it easy to surpass him.
and then, gathering his forces from every quarter and all the necessary material, he founded on the Euphrates river a city which was well fortified with walls, giving it the form of a rectangle.
