Text
Flavius Josephus, Contra Apionem 1.8-9:
… as is admitted by themselves (= the Greeks), the Egyptians, the Chaldeans, and the Phoenicians - for the moment I omit to add our nation to the list - possess a very ancient and permanent record of the past. For all these nations inhabit countries which are least exposed to the ravages of the atmosphere, and they have been very careful to let none of the events in their history be forgotten, but always to have them enshrined in official records written by their greatest sages.
