The turning-points of the sun in Odyssey probably refers to the kind of Mul Apin observations of how the rising point of the sun moves along the eastern horizon between the two solstices.

Homer, Odyssey 15.403-404:
There is an island called Syrie, if you have heard of it, above Ortygia, where are the turning-points (tropai) of the sun.
