Suits could be brought only on certain days according to the Roman calendar.

Cicero, Pro Murena 25:
In former times very few knew whether or not an action at law could be brought; for the calendar was not publicly known. Those who gave legal decisions had great power; they were asked to indicate the day on which a suit could be brought as if they were Chaldean astrologers.
