Polyaenus, Stratagemata 7.6.8:
Cyrus was besieging Babylon; the Babylonians with grain supplies for many years were laughing at the siege. Cyrus cut a canal and carried off the Euphrates, which ran through the middle of the city, into a nearby marsh. The Babylonians without water to drink immediately surrendered to Cyrus.
