The Seleucid Empire (Syria and Mesopotamia) is known generally as Babylonia according to Strabo.
Strabo 16.1.16: In ancient times Babylon was the metropolis of Assyria; but now Seleuceia is the metropolis And as we call the country Babylonia, so also we call the men from there Babylonians, that is, not after the city, but after the country; but we do not call men after Seleuceia, if they are from there, as, for example, Diogenes the Stoic philosopher [who was known as Diogenes the Babylonian; see Cicero, De Nat. Deorum 1.15].
